We can see almost 10 million colours with the naked eye and we think that black is the best colour for everyone?
Now, Neiman Marcus would argue that โWomen who wear black live colourful livesโ. I could argue that this is the same reason many homes are painted white for resale.
It is a palette cleanser. Easy. Requires little thought.
Black can be seen as:
- Powerful
- Elegant
- Slimming
- Formal
It can also be seen as:
- Aggressive
- Draining
- Depressing
- Funereal

Undertone
Underlying quality of your skin tone can be cool, neutral, or warm. It is determined by your haemoglobin and carotene. This is different to the surface hue or overtone of your skin. E.g. A tan or illness changes the overtone.
Intensity
Whether the skin is bright or muted.
Value
Whether the skin tone is light or dark. This is determined by the amount of melanin in your skin.
These three indicatorโs determine if black can make you look powerful & elegant or drained and tired.
Donโt worry though! Everyone has a version that will compliment their undertone and make them look fabulous.

What if you have to wear pure black because the dress code requires it?
If you can add anything personalized, e.g. a shirt in your best white or an accessory in a wow colour, then do it. Otherwise, try and find a style & cut that will flatter your body and personality. Then wear it with confidence.
When should you wear your best version of black?
Formal occasions and important work meetings. Spaces when you need to hold your space and shine.
If your wardrobe is mainly black, I wish you to ask yourself these questions:
Do you wear black as an emotional shield?
Do you wear black to hide?
Do you wear black because it is โeasyโ?
