We are in week 3 of the new normal of social distancing. Our last big box grocery shop was on March 12th and the items we now need cannot be picked up in our smaller, family-run shops. We had a long list of items for both our household and my parents. The goal was to get as much as possible so we could avoid a big box store for another 2-3 weeks.
This doesn’t mean we will be avoiding our local shops. My mom ordered and picked up from The Butcher Shop last week. That means I have ground beef, chicken, bacon, and hot dogs already in the freezer. When we run out of fresh fruit and vegetables, I will visit Courage Foods and Tony & Claudia’s Fallingbrook Market. I might also head up to Montmartre Bakery … I miss their pretzels and danishes!

This was the lineup to get into Loblaws at approximately 8:00am this morning. My husband nominated himself to do the shop and walked over with our wagon. It was about a 20 minute wait to get inside.
Thankfully, the fruit & vegetables, dairy, and coffee were well stocked. Let’s all just appreciate the fact that coffee was in stock – this is important in our household. Unfortunately, we were not so lucky with meat or frozen foods.

The rest of the shop included wraps, a baguette, sausages, burger patties, oats, hummus, olives, Perrier, and soap. It was a big shop and since we are social distancing it did not have the cost savings I usually get by shopping around.
What will we be eating?
- Fruit and Veggies for snacks and meals.
- Pasta from our last big shop, sauce from the freezer, and meatballs from our freezer.
- Chicken from the butcher with korma sauce from the cupboard, rice, and frozen peas.
- Bacon and egg wraps.
- Cheese Quesadillas – my daughter would live off of these right now hence the amount of cheese we purchased!
- Yogurt and fruit.
- Sausage with sweet potato.
What are you buying and making during this time? Has it encouraged you to explore new recipes or are you seeking comfort foods?
