Have you ever wondered why there are ribbons sewn into the shoulders of your sweaters? When the store hangs the sweater on display, the ribbon helps keep it connected to the hanger. But do you need to keep the ribbons once you get the sweater home?

It is not recommended to hang sweaters; they lose their shape and start to stretch. Think of those weird bumps in the shoulders after an item has hung in the closet too long. Annoying. The best storage method for sweaters is folding, preferably in closed storage so they don’t get dusty. If you do not have shelving or dresser drawer space, then sweaters should be hung on thick, padded hangers to preserve the shape of the shoulder.
These special hangers are an investment and can be hard to find at times. If you have to hang your sweaters and you only have your plastic hangers, I recommend folding the sweater over the hanger. Today.com has a great tutorial – How to hang sweaters … without ruining them – that will cause the least stretch to your knits.
Now, back to the question … Do you need to keep the ribbons? Hopefully after reading about proper knit storage, you can see that the ribbons can be cut off. No need to fight with them anymore, yeah!
